There are many legends regarding why North Carolina is called the “Tar Heel State”. One legend mentioned by The University of North Carolina has the nickname being applied to the State’s residents as long ago as the Revolutionary War.

According to this story, the troops of British General Cornwallis were fording what is now known as the Tar River between Rocky Mount and Battleboro when they discovered that tar had been dumped into the stream to impede their crossing. When they finally got across the river they found their feet completely black with tar. Their observation that anyone who waded North Carolina rivers would acquire tar heels led to the nickname first being used. One could hardly imagine this when paddling down the beautiful waters and rushing streams of North Carolina today.

The beauty and peacefulness and serene seclusion of the Western Mountains where the Blue Ridge Parkway meanders for more than 250 miles through North Carolina from the Virginia border to the Great Smoky Mountain National Park is the perfect place to live and many Communities are being developed there with exquisite views and glorious panoramas of mountains, waterfalls and placid lakes.

Enjoy all four seasons in North Carolina, including the wonderful winter months.  Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains near Maggie Valley in the western part of the state, The Cataloochee Ski Area promises Great Skiing & Snowboarding and the experience of "southern hospitality on the slopes" along with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks

Traveling eastwards from the North Carolina mountains there are many fine towns to live, work and dream in and High Point, called the “Furniture Capital of the World” is a shopper’s paradise, particularly when furnishing your home in North Carolina or anywhere else for that matter.

You may wish to consider making your home in Chapel Hill, Durham, Cary or Raleigh with their natural beauty, friendly atmosphere, rich history and lively local arts and music scene.  Durham, home of Duke University houses one of the foremost medical facilities in the world.

The North Carolina coast has much to offer boaters, fishermen and water sports enthusiasts, from the beaches to the Outer Banks, from the Sounds to the back creeks, there is something for everyone.

The Outer Banks and barrier islands, a picture of serenity, are famous for their pristine beaches and fun activities – the perfect place for a beautiful beach home.  The town of Nags Head is one of the oldest areas on the Outer Banks and is one of the most recognized on the long thin string of barrier islands.

From the Mountains to the Outer Banks and every place in between, North Carolina offers a diverse blend of excitement and culture with traditional south charm and hospitality and makes a great place for you and your pet to visit and maybe even some day call home.
